Join us at Driving Creek Pottery for a comprehensive 5-day wheel throwing pottery course, designed for beginners to intermediate.
This course is perfect for anyone looking to explore the art of pottery whether you want to learn basic pottery throwing skills or have some experience and want to develop your pottery skills further under expert tutelage. A maximum of 5 students keeps your group small, close-knit and provides more direct tuition with your tutor.
Each teaching session will run from 10:00am to 4:00pm, with day 1 starting at 9:30am to give more time to introduce you to the space, tutor and others on the course.
What You'll Learn:
Day 1: Throwing Cylinders & Cylindrical Forms
- Start with the basics of throwing cylinders, then progress to creating other cylindrical forms such as jugs and vases. This session will help you develop a solid foundation for your clay practice.
Day 2: Creating Bowls
- Progress to creating bowls, focusing on footed and unfooted forms. You will have the opportunity to look at other wide forms such as plates and platters.
Day 3: Self Directed Practice
- Move on to forms of your choice, guided by our experienced tutors. This is an opportunity to experiment with shapes and techniques that interest you and to practice the skills you have learnt in the previous days.
Day 4-5: Trimming & Pulled Handles
- The final two days will be dedicated to refining your pieces through trimming, adding final details, and learning how to create and attach pulled handles. You may also have time to experiment with different decorating techniques.
All tools and materials are provided. At the end of the course you will be able to pick two pieces, maximum size 20cm x 20cm, to be glazed and fired in the Driving Creek production facilities. You can take any greenware with you.
For Advanced Potters: If you have experience with wheel throwing and are looking to challenge yourself further, we also offer an advanced throwing course. This course delves into more complex forms and techniques, providing the perfect environment to push your skills to the next level.
Whether you're just starting or looking to build on your existing knowledge, this course will give you a strong foundation in pottery, with plenty of room for creativity and personal expression.
We provide all of the clay and tools, but you are welcome to bring your own tools if you prefer. The course price also includes the glazing and firing of two pieces of maximum of 20cm x 20cm. You are welcome to take any greenware with you.
