Fun With Plaster – A Two-Day Mould Making Workshop with Tim Grocott of TAUS Ceramics

- Location: Coromandel Town, Waikato
Join ceramic artist Tim Grocott of TAUS Ceramics for a hands-on two-day workshop exploring how plaster mould making can expand your pottery practice. Whether you're new to moulds or looking to develop your skills, this workshop will give you practical techniques you can take straight home and use.
Over two days, you'll learn to make simple press moulds for tiles and sprigs, before moving on to more complex two-piece moulds suitable for slip casting. Each day builds on the last, and you'll leave with all the moulds you make — ready to use in your own studio.
Day One focuses on press moulds. You'll start by planning your design, working with slabs and tiles, and pouring your first plaster mould. After lunch, you'll unbox your moulds and explore surface decoration using carving tools.
Day Two introduces two-piece slip casting moulds using glass bottles. You'll learn how to identify parting lines, clay up your form, pour both halves of the mould, and finish with a test tile. By the end of the afternoon, you'll unbox and demould your finished pieces.
All materials are provided. Participants are welcome to bring basic pottery tools such as ribs, knives, a dust mask, and carving tools. You're also encouraged to bring along any objects you'd like to make a mould from, though plenty of bottles will be available on the day.
